Winter turns into spring which turns into summer. And I have not been diligent about blog posting. I can make up a bunch of reasons, but the truth is that I am still to busy at work as a surgeon to have time to do the fun stuff for the farm. But my schedule has changed and I will try again to get to my weekly posts.
It has been a busy spring and summer. We had 28 kids drop this year. Some were really late winter and by the time we got to them they were already. The rest came at a more normal time and thankfully everyone has been relatively healthy. We decided to cross our Boer buck with our Kiko girls and vice versa. The Boers get nice bulky kids, but they seem to have more issues with parasites then the Kikos. So we are rasing Bikos or Kiboers, depending upon your perspective.
In any case as was once famously by the Who, the kids are alright. Everybody is pretty much weaned, and this is the time when, if we are going to have parasite issues, the problems come. Had a couple of kids with scores, but overall they’re ok. Hopefully, we can get them healthy to the slaughterhouse in the late fall, and once again we can start selling USDA kid and likely lamb as well. If we have a good enough kosher rate, we will sell kosher cuts as well.
A new page on the website will be upcoming. Bobbi is starting to sell a limited amount of her alpaca wool. It is mixed with merino has an 80/20 alpaca/merino blend. We have colors from tan to dark chocolate in 2 and 3 ply. Each skein will be 25 dollars plus S&H. We also will have roving for sale at 25 per 4 oz again plus S&H. Will post some pictures of representative skeins.
For now, it is definitely time to shower. Summer in south central PA is hot and ridiculously humid and today was no exception. But we got the chores done. Everyone has hay and water. We cleaned out the old canned goods more than 18 months old and the goats and chickens were happy to oblige by eating the leftovers.
Until next time (hopefully next Sunday)
